How Spybot Search & Destroy Protects Your Information: Case Study

Everyday, hackers manage to steal terabytes of information from businesses. These thieves take social security numbers, account ID’s, bank information, addresses, phone numbers, and anything of value. If you look online at places like download.com, there are free software programs that can help you protect your personal information. Spybot Search & Destroy is one of these programs, and we’d like to share a case study of how to use it.

Spybot Search & Destroy is a spyware removal tool that scans your computer for malicious code and removes it. It has both paid and free versions, and it’s been around since 2001. Local companies can use this software to protect their personal information.

Case Study: Perfect Pave Uses Spybot Adware Removal Tool

In 2002, Perfect Pave, a paving contractor in Albany, NY, reached out to us about a breach in their network. They had two Dell computer workstations that were connected to the Internet, but they had no virus protection programs at all. One of the local paving contractor’s employees clicked on a link that installed spyware on the computer system. This was big problem because of the data that paving companies store. They have your full name, home address, phone number, and either a credit card number on file or a bank account number from the check you paid for their paving service with. Although it’s not a huge amount of data, it’s very important nonetheless.

After looking into the issue, we determined that the best course of action was to install Spybot Search & Destroy. We scanned Perfect Pave’s computer system and found a Trojan horse that was able to take full control of the computer if given more time. It took about 20 minutes to remove the virus and return the computers to normal. Since then, Perfect Pave has used special firewalls and the paid version of Spybot Search & Destroy to protect their customer information. We highly recommend this spyware removal tool to any local contractor or business owner who’s thinking about computerizing their payment systems. The paid and free version are available at download.com.
